GUYANA:

My exciting news is that I’ve been invited by the government of Guyana & the  Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA), along with the Guyana Trade Investment Strategy (GTIS) program to be their guest & visit their country on what is called a “familiarization tour”.  Though time constraints are very tight with my other travel plans, I am jumping at the opportunity to help them, and hopefully discover new destinations for my own tours.   My job will be a “walk in the park” as it is doing what I always do on my “recon” trips for my own tours, which is performing a feasibility study on the pros and cons for wildlife and nature photographers traveling around the country.  I’ll be sizing up the logistics of how we can best handle our equipment (especially those with large lenses), how best to travel around the country safely, accommodations, electrical considerations and all the information needed to insure a safe and successful photographic tour.  Of course, I’ll be relaying all this information back to GTA & GTIS, making suggestions and recommendations on how to handle and better improve setups for their photo tours.  This is a wonderful ‘win-win’ situation for all concerned. 
Some facts:  <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /><st1:country-region w:st="on">Guyana</st1:country-region> is bordered by <st1:country-region w:st="on">Venezuela</st1:country-region>, <st1:country-region w:st="on">Brazil</st1:country-region>, <st1:country-region w:st="on">Suriname</st1:country-region>, & the <st1:place w:st="on">Atlantic Ocean on So. <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:country-region w:st="on">America</st1:country-region>’s northeastern shoulder.

90% of this country’s English-speaking inhabitants live along the coastline, leaving the interior a mostly unpopulated pristine rainforest---one of four left in the world.  Guyana boasts to have more than 800 species of birds from 72 different families, plus many species still unidentified.  Georgetown, the country’s capital, hosts more than 200 of these species from 39 families. 
I’ll be visiting one of the world’s wonders, the Kaieteur Falls, the world’s largest single-drop waterfall at 741 feet, which is five times the height of Niagara Falls!

There are 225 species of known, documented mammals such as:  jaguar, anteaters, bats, armadillos and on, & on, on. 
As many of you already know, I’ve spent a lot of time, effort & money traveling to various areas of the world on “recon missions” & have volunteered my expertise & time to set up their blinds, feeders, clear areas & in general improve their location’s photography opportunities.  I’ve become pretty adept at sizing a situation up quickly and accurately.  I don’t want to jinx myself, but just from the information that has been sent to me by GTA & GTIS, I can tell I’m in for an incredible experience and feel confident in making the bold statement that if all goes as well as I think, I’ll be offering a Joanne Williams Photo Tour to Guyana in November 2007!!  I’ll be leaving for Guyana on Feb. 1st, returning on the 11th.   More later.......

  JAPAN:

A few days before receiving the call about Guyana, unexpected, impromptu plans for a trip to Japan were finalized.  Dates are February 16th (leaving only five days between the rain- forests of Guyana & the snows and Siberian winds of Japan) and return on March 3rd.  I guess I’ve seen too many award winning images of snow monkeys in

Nature\'s Best that when the same photographic opportunity arose, I was hooked like a fish!  Of course, anyone with an ounce of common sense would have hesitated when they were informed that they should look for boots that are rated minus-30 degrees, especially if that person had lived in warm & toasty Florida for most of her life!  I didn’t even ask if it was centigrade or fahrenheit, or even check the geographical locations of any of the potential subjects. All I saw were the words endangered red-crowned (Japanese) cranes, Steller’s and white-tailed Sea Eagles, and whooper swans.  I completely missed the part about these birds residing on Japan’s northern most island, Hokkaido, whose weather patterns are influenced by the Siberian winds!  Guess that meant cold & snow….duh…ie the name snow monkeys, right? 
It all started with the mere mention of snow monkeys that hang out in the mountains of Nagano Prefecture on the island of Honshu (the Japanese Alps)

which, come to find out, is about 20 miles from the island of Hokkaido, but across the deep waters of the Tsugaru Straits.  Siberian winds, deep waters, islands, snow…...back on the phone for the third call to Cabela’s for another order of warm, thermal underwear, socks & face mask!!  The cash register just keeps on ticking.  Oh well,  I’m sure when all is said and done, I’ll arrive back with some terrific images to share with all of you, and probably a cold and frostbite, but what the heck….. who said nature photographers had ‘both oars in the water’!!  Any hot tips from you seasoned, cold weather photographers are more than welcome.

TITUSVILLE WILDLIFE & BIRDING FESTIVAL REMINDER: The dates are January 24 thru the 28th.  This is the Tenth Annual Space Coast Birding & Wildlife Festival, and I’m very proud to be apart of it again this year, and invite you all to come and join in on the festivities.  As in the past, I will have a large double booth displaying many images from the many areas of the world that I conduct my Joanne Williams Photo Safaris, and information on future tours, workshops, and new items for sale.  I’m giving three in-the-field workshops: on 1/25/07 & 1/27/07 at Merritt Is., and 1/26/07 at Viera wetlands.

On 1/26 and 1/27 from 4:00 pm until 5:00 pm, I will be giving a slide show production- presentation titled The Pantanal and Much More. I’m sure the last two available spots for Pantanal Tour #2 will sell out after everyone sees what this, the largest inland wetland in the world,  has to offer.  The pictures tell the tale.

 NANPA SUMMIT

This Sunday morning I’ll be getting on a plane bound for Palm Springs, California to attend the annual North American Nature Photographers Association conference, returning the following Saturday.  I’m planning on returning incredibly smarter than I already am, <SMILE> as will be taking both portions of Photoshop guru, Tim Grey’s, workshop!  I’m also going to sneak out and go photograph at the Salton Sea and perhaps at the Joshua Tree National Park.  Ecuador’s primo tour company, Neblina Forest, & owner, Xavier Munoz, will have a booth where I will be available to personally answer any questions regarding our photography tours to the Pantanal and/or the Galapagos Islands, Napo Wildlife Center, and other rain and cloud forests destinations.  New to the conference (and very exciting to me) is the country of Guyana’s presence with their representative, Judy Karwacki and other GTA reps.  I will also be making myself  available to assist them with any photography and/or photographic tour questions.  Keep in mind that for the most part, these have historically been birding companies & birding tours.  I’ve been diligently trying to widen their scopes (no pun intended) to understand the economic benefits of working hard with photographers and learning and understanding that our needs are very different than a birder’s or a nature lover’s.  I feel that I’ve made some pretty good in-roads thus far, and look forward to sharing them with you.  Looking forward to seeing many old friends, and meeting and making many new ones at both NANPA & Titusville.
